World No Tobacco Day

Today (May 31st) is World No Tobacco Day!

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is intended to encourage 24-hour abstinence from all forms of tobacco and to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and it’s negative health effects.

Worldwide, the consumption of tobacco causes 6 million deaths each year worldwide – 600,000 of these are a result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

The focus of this year’s campaign is to promote the introduction of plain packaging of tobacco products.

Plain packaging removes the promotional aspects of brands – such as logo’s, bright colours, brand images, or promotional information – making them less appealing or noticeable.

World Health Organisation Director-General Dr Margaret Chan said;

“Plain packaging reduces the attractiveness of tobacco products. It kills the glamour, which is appropriate for a product that kills people. It restricts tobacco advertising and promotion. It limits misleading packaging and labelling. And it increases the effectiveness of health warnings.”
